Toastmasters and me

I love to write. I write social content, web copy and marketing bits for small business owners. I journal about my adventures and of course, I blog!

My love for writing may have started when I was a teen when I wrote to penpals. I would look at the profiles in the classified section of my local newspaper. That’s where I’d find people looking to make new friends across the country or around the world.

I remember checking the mailbox a few times a week hoping a letter would arrive and, if I was lucky, there would be a picture with the letter so I could see what my new friend looked like. This was how we connected before the internet!

A digital world

A lot has changed since my penpal-writing days. I rarely write letters anymore. Communication is digital — emails, text messages or social posts to engage with friends and family. Meetings are over video and sometimes even family catch-ups!

When I started my career in communications, I was fortunate to work for a national organization writing content for employees across the country, creating promotions and even writing speeches and presentations for senior leaders. That might be where I got the bug to stand in front of an audience and deliver my own presentation.

Overcoming the fear

They say the fear of public speaking is one of the top fears people have. I got my wish to speak publicly early in my career.

My hands were sweaty. My heart was beating quickly and all I could think about was how I was going to get out of that room!

I delivered my speech. Was it perfect? No. But I made it through and I learned that I needed help.

Toastmasters — safe and supportive

Any time I’m nervous about a situation, I put on my imaginary hat and it gives me the little bit of confidence I need to me through any situation I’m nervous about.

Toastmasters is like an imaginary hat. It’s a safe and supportive place to learn and practice your communication skills. Its programs teach you speech techniques that will help you engage, inspire or motivate your audience with proper vocal variety, body language and speech structure.

From your first ice-breaker speech to an impromptu speech to a longer prepared speech, you’ll have the confidence you need to succeed.

If leadership is your goal, Toastmasters also offers a leadership development program that outlines the different leadership styles and when each style is most effective.

I joined Toastmasters and never looked back.

With more than 15,000 clubs in 146 countries, it’ll be easy to find a club near you. Why not explore everything Toastmasters has to offer?

If personal growth is important to you, put on your brave hat and take the first step. Visit a club near you. You won’t regret it.
