Finding your ‘get up and go’

I was laying in bed thinking about the things I needed to do. Despite having a good night’s sleep, laying in bed was a pretty comfortable place to be on a dark and dreary autumn morning.

I needed some motivation to get up and go.

It’s not always easy to find motivation, but it can be done. Here are some of the things that motivate me.

It’s easy when it’s a passion. Doing something you’re passionate about, makes the task so much easier. I love writing, so when I know I have writing assignments to jump into, I look forward to it. The hard part is getting the other to-dos out of the way so I can write with a clear mind!

Progress is a great motivator. Setting measurable goals and tracking your progress along the way allows you to stay focused on your deadlines and achievements. Setting a goal is a great way to stay motivated. When I see progress because I’m hitting milestones along the way, I’m encouraged to keep going.

Breaking bigger goals into smaller more achievable ones helps you to measure progress and keeps you motivated.

Interesting people add enjoyment. We all have people in our lives who we enjoy seeing more than others — people who share your passions, have a wealth of knowledge and experience, or maybe they just show support and interest in your goals and accomplishments. There’s nothing wrong with that. Whoever they are, they make your day.

I may not look forward to going to work, an event or gathering, but knowing some of my favourite people will be there, motivates me to go.

Thoughtful gestures make the day. Acts of kindness are positive gestures that help to make someone’s day a little brighter. Doing something kind for someone is a win-win for both parties, the giver and the receiver. If that isn’t a motivator, what is?

Rewards have a positive impact. There’s a positive emotion that comes when you realize a goal. You’ve succeeded and that’s a good feeling. A reward at the end makes it even better and it’s a great motivator. When I lose 10 lbs, I’m rewarding myself with a special dinner out!

Get up and go

There will always be tasks you’re not excited about. That’s just life. Take a look at what you need to get done and the positive outcomes. Will you help someone? Will you learn from the experience? Is there a reward at the end? If I get up and wash my floor, I’m going to appreciate the clean floor and the rest of my afternoon to do something I enjoy!

So, jump into it, bring your mind to a happier place and get it done! Then, enjoy a little reward.

How do you motivate yourself to get something done?
