As I pull into the family restaurant for a quick breakfast before I start my day, I see the line-up of matching trucks along the outer rim of the parking lot. Looks like an electrical company is starting its day with a little team building disguised as a hearty breakfast. Not a bad idea.
In simplest terms, teamwork describes working together to achieve a common goal. That doesn’t necessarily mean people. Beavers and bees are great examples of where teamwork gets the job done!

Beaver parents model their skill in lodge and dam building for beaver kids or kit, until they acquire the skills and techniques to do it on their own. Beaver families stick together and will work together to build their home.
Teamwork involves individuals combining their skills, knowledge and efforts to contribute to the overall success of the team. Let’s look at some key aspects and benefits of teamwork.
Cooperation: When you work as a team, you share information, ideas and resources. Each person on the team comes with unique experiences and skills from educational backgrounds or work and life experiences. Everyone learns and benefits from this exposure.
Coordination: Effective teamwork requires coordination. Members synchronize their actions, ensuring that everyone is on the same page and working toward the same objectives. The collective success of a team depends on mutual support.
Roles and responsibilities: Each team member has specific roles and responsibilities. By understanding their contributions, they can align their efforts and avoid duplication. Imagine the weight lifted when you’re not the one responsible to deliver every component of the project.
Communication: Open communication is crucial. Team members discuss progress, challenges, and changes. Active listening and clear expression foster a positive team environment. A strong team leader will keep the lines of communication open and ensure everything flows smoothly.
Trust: Trust is a key aspect of successful teams and builds a strong foundation. Trust enables members to get the work done knowing they can share ideas and delegate.
Problem solving: Teams collaborate to solve problems collectively. Diverse perspectives lead to innovative solutions.
Working as a team also benefits the less skilled or newer workers who are eager to learn from the more seasoned workers. On-the-job training is one of the best ways to impart skills. Think of the apprentice who shadows the licensed electrician or plumber to get hands-on experience from the expert. Or the kits who learn from the examples displayed by their parents!
Whether you’re part of a work team, a family or a sports team — or a bee hive — there are benefits to being part of a team. After all, “teamwork makes the dream work.” Right?
