Ambition. Do you have it?

Today I got thinking about ambition. I feel like some people have it and some people don’t. This might be true, but if you understand that ambition presents itself in different ways, you might be surprised to find most people do.

Ambition: a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work.

Oxford Language

Thinking of people I know who are (in my eyes) ambitious, they’re determined and driven in different ways. Some work long and crazy hours to achieve their goals. Some are more methodical and take a slow and steady approach, one step at a time. Some are just happy to work away quietly unnoticed.

Whether it’s training for a competition, studying to earn a degree or building a small business, ambitious people share one common characteristic. They all have a plan and they’re working towards their goals.

Ambition keeps us going and makes life more interesting. That doesn’t mean you need to set enormous goals, like qualifying for the Olympics or climbing Mount Everest, but rather setting your sights on goals you want to achieve over time. These can be long-term or short.

What type of ambition do you have?

Ambition are can be defined in numerous ways. For example:

Wildly ambitious people have a strong desire to succeed. They’re more likely to be risk takers and be willing to throw anything and everything at an idea to make it happen.

Blindly ambitious people are not aware of what’s happening around them. They have a knack for shutting things out and may even compromise their own beliefs to get to what they want. They’re unaware of the possible outcomes or the consequences. They’re not aware of what’s happening around them.

People with selfish ambition are more focused on themselves than others. They’ll always put their own interests first in pursuit of their goals.

You could be one of these or you could be simply ambitious! You work towards your goal with passion, focus and determination. And, depending on the size or type of your goal — education, lifestyle, financial — you have a plan in place to make it happen.

Not sure about your level of ambition? Take a minute to think about your passions and the items on your bucket list. You could be working towards a degree or a promotion. You want to make a difference in the neighbourhood. You’re starting a business, or you just want to get that quilt done before Christmas. How determined are you to achieve your goals?

Oh yes, you’re ambitious!
