The joy of a hug

Do people seem more huggy at this time of the year, or is it just me? Personally, I’m not a “hugger.” It’s something I’m working on though.

As the holiday season approaches, hugs become more than just a gesture — they’re part of the magic that makes this time of year so special. Whether it’s greeting relatives you haven’t seen in months, saying goodbye to friends after a festive party, or simply sharing a quiet moment under twinkling lights, hugs are the unspoken language of connection.

Why hugs feel so good

When someone wraps you up in a hug, it just feels good — like a little burst of comfort you didn’t know you needed. Suddenly the stress melts away, and you can’t help but smile.

Around the holidays, when everything gets a bit busy and overwhelming, hugs are like tiny presents you don’t have to unwrap. They’re a gentle reminder to pause, take a breath, and soak in the warmth of being close to the people you care about.

What type of hugger are you?

According to MomJunction, different hugs carry different meanings. Here’s a few.

  • The Bear Hug – Big, tight and warm. Perfect for family reunions around the holiday table.
  • The Side Hug – Casual and friendly, great for office parties or quick greetings at festive gatherings.
  • The Long Hold Hug – Lingering and tender, often romantic, ideal for cozy nights by the fire.
  • The Back Hug – Sweet and protective, like a surprise embrace while decorating the tree.
  • The Quick Hug – A cheerful squeeze that says “Happy Holidays!” without slowing you down.

Each hug is unique, meaningful and adds a little sparkle to the bigger picture.

Recharge your spirit

In the midst of holiday shopping lists and party planning, hugs are the simplest way to recharge your spirit.

This holiday season, notice the style of hugs you give and receive. They’re more than greetings — they’re little gifts of joy, comfort and love. And the best part? No wrapping paper required. Now go out and hug someone!
