My good friend has the gift of gab and can strike up a conversation and make friends wherever she goes. She’s not loud or pushy—just effortlessly engaging.
For some of us, like me, starting a conversation can feel intimidating—whether meeting someone for the first time or joining a group of people at a business meeting. But it doesn’t have to be awkward. With a little intention and curiosity, you can turn a simple “hello” into a meaningful exchange.
Start with a smile and a greeting

Pair a warm smile with a friendly “Hi” or “Good morning,” and you’ve already set a welcoming tone. If you’re in a shared space like a community centre or event, a casual “How’s your day going?” works wonders.
Ask open-ended questions
Instead of yes-or-no questions, try ones that invite stories or opinions.
- “What brought you here today?”
- “What do you enjoy doing in your free time?”
- “Do you come from a big family or a small one”
These questions show genuine interest and give the other person room to share.
Listen more than you talk
People love to talk about themselves and they love to feel heard. Nod, make eye contact and respond thoughtfully. You don’t need to have all the answers—just being present and engaged is enough.
Find common ground
Look for shared interests, experiences or even mutual acquaintances. If you’re both part of the same community, that’s already a great starting point.
- “I’ve just started playing Think. Think.—have you heard of it?”
- “I saw you at the art class last week. What did you think?”
Be yourself
Starting a conversation isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being present. Whether you’re sparking a new friendship or simply brightening someone’s day, a few thoughtful words can go a long way.
So go ahead—say hello. You never know where it might lead.
