Perspective

Having grown up in the country, I see forests as a valuable asset for wildlife, shelter, clean air, tourism and a plethora of other benefits. Someone working in urban development and planning or perhaps raised in a big city, will likely have a different perspective.

Perspectives vary based on experiences, upbringings, culture, education and so much more. These elements help build your unique bank of knowledge and skills, and your personal views.

Let’s look at a few characteristics that may influence your perspective.

  1. Background and culture: We view the world based on the way we’re raised, our cultural beliefs and our education.
  2. Personal experiences: Life journeys and unique experiences play a big role in how we see things.
  3. Beliefs and values: Our core beliefs—whether religious, political or philosophical—impact our perspective.
  4. Emotional state: Emotions affect perspective. When happy, we tend to see situations more positively; when stressed, negativity can dominate.
  5. Social influence: It’s quite easy for friends to influence you to think one way or another. We want to conform, fit in and gain approval. Social media or news streams can also influence our perspective.
  6. Age differences: Generations have varied perspectives and views from adaptability to technology to prioritizing experiences and being goal centric.

Perspective: a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.

We all have our own perspectives, but understanding and considering the perspectives of others helps us build stronger relationships and an appreciation for our differences. Take the time to listen and ask questions. You might just change your perspective.
