Writing can be a relaxing and fulfilling experience. I know because writing on my patio with a cool drink surrounded by the sound of birds singing is one of my favourite things to do!
However, there are times when knowing what to write is a challenge. If you feel the same, I offer you the following.

Whether you’re looking for inspiration or need a fresh idea, here are some writing prompts to get your creative juices flowing.
Write about your earliest memory or a challenging experience that holds special significance.
One of my most memorable experiences was a 73 km hike over the La Cloche Mountains in Northern Ontario. The climb tested both my mental and physical strength. I’ve written about this experience in my journal and weaved it into speeches and stories. Every time I hike I think about this challenging experience and my dear friend, who has since passed away.
Write about your interests, hobbies or unique perspectives.
What’s your special interest. Writing about something you love to do and then sharing the experience with your readers can be good for the soul. Share your perspective on a skill or teach others how it’s done! I’ve filled hours of enjoyment with my granddaughter after learning how to felt together — a craft I knew very little about until I picked up a book on it.
Explore themes like overcoming challenges or pursuing dreams and goals.
What’s your greatest accomplishment or biggest challenge? Telling your story just might inspire someone else facing the same goals or give them the strength to get through a difficult situation. And, you’ll feel good writing about it!
Reflect on your favorite poem or quote and its meaning to you. Share your thoughts and interpretation in a blog or an online poetry forum. Perhaps you want to try your hand at writing poetry? It’s not something I’ve thought about doing, but who knows, maybe one day?
Explore your senses. Just like children explore textures, tastes and sounds, you can in your writing. Practice describing the sounds, smells and views around you. As I sit here on my patio, I can hear the soft hum of a cool breeze as it quietly rustles the leaves in the trees that surround me.
Let your silly out and write an imaginary story. Create your own characters and piece together their adventures! The best part is, no one ever needs to read it unless you choose to share it. You could even do this with a child; let them take your story to fun and unique places you never thought about.
Remember, writing is a journey, and there’s no shortage of topics waiting to be explored. Choose one that resonates with you, and let your imagination take flight!
Now get writing!
