A new language with a “hook”

I’ll be honest—I almost forgot to write this week’s blog. My mind hasn’t been on word counts or headlines lately because I’ve been busy with a different kind of “hook.”

Instead of typing, I’ve been crocheting. Not something totally foreign to me, but something I haven’t done in a very long time.

I quickly realized that crocheting isn’t just a hobby; it’s an entire language. If you’ve ever looked at a crochet pattern, you know what I mean. It’s a lot of code—sc, hdc, sl st, magic ring—that looked like gibberish to me just a few weeks ago. I had to sit down and learn the “grammar” of these stitches just to understand what my hands were supposed to be doing. Thank goodness for video tutorials!

It’s been a humbling reminder of what it’s like to be a total beginner. There’s a certain kind of focus you need when you’re learning a new way to communicate, even if that communication is done with yarn instead of a keyboard.

My goal for all this “language study”? Two little turtles for my granddaughters. Are they perfect? Definitely not. One shell is a bit lopsided, and the stitches are a little tighter in some spots than others. But as I worked on them, I realized that their “less-than-perfect” look is actually the best part. It shows the effort, the mistakes, and the fact that a real person (their grandma!) sat there and figured it out for them.

So, if I’m a little quiet on the blog front, just know I’m still “writing”—I’m just doing it one stitch at a time.
