Our story may not be unique, but it’s one we’re passionate about. We’ve created a product — a tabletop game — from scratch. The idea is ours, the content was written by us, the designs were created from our imagination, and we were in charge of sourcing all the pieces, printers and potential supporters.
Now, we’ve come to one of the most exciting steps in our journey, in my opinion, and that’s telling our story to potential backers.
Backers want to know your story is authentic. They want to know who you are and why you’re passionate about the product you’re promoting, but most of all, they want to know that it’s well planned and thought out.
According to Kickstarter, a global crowdfunding platform, backers want to know who you are. They want to connect with your vision and understand why it’s important to you.
Our story
Writing our story gave us the validation we needed that our product has an audience where we can make an impact. Our game is focused on literacy and mental health. We want to encourage people to take a break from their devices and interact with each other. This is important, not just for families, but also for seniors because we know that playing games helps improve cognitive health and memory.

According to care-clinics.com, ‘Excessive screen time and social media use can have implications for mental health. It can contribute to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression, particularly among adolescents who may experience cyberbullying or negative social comparisons on social platforms.’
Writing our story allowed us to litmus test our target audience. The process also helped us clarify our purpose and our vision.
Consider these steps
Enough about us. What steps should you consider to grab the attention of a backer? Let’s take a look.
1. Define your project clearly:
- Provide a concise and clear description of your project. Explain the value and impact of your project. What problem does it solve, or what need does it fulfill? Be sure to identify your target audience and the value it brings.
2. Craft a compelling story:
- People connect with stories. Share your passion, your journey, and the inspiration behind your project. The more relatable, the better.
3. Create engaging visuals:
- Video is a great way to portray emotion and is essential to introducing yourself or showcasing your project.
- Highlight your project and its features with high-resolution photos and or graphics. Visuals help bring your project to life, and greatly increase the likelihood of potential backers becoming actual backers.
We still have work to do before we hit ‘publish’ on our campaign, but we’re excited and optimistic to see the outcome.
Do you have a story to tell?
