With the rise of digital communications, meeting online is more popular than ever. While virtual meetings offer convenience and flexibility, we can’t underestimate the value of in-person interaction. Here’s why meeting face-to-face still holds benefits over meeting online.
Personal connection
Meeting in person fosters a level of personal connection that you just can’t get from a virtual meeting. That’s because body language, facial expressions and eye contact play crucial roles in building trust and rapport. These subtle cues often get lost in online interactions.
Enhanced communication and collaboration
Face-to-face meetings facilitate more dynamic and spontaneous communication. In-person discussions allow for immediate feedback and the seamless exchange of ideas, often leading to more effective collaboration. When you’re meeting online, you can experience delays from technical glitches and uncomfortable flow of conversation. It’s much more difficult to engage in conversation when your physical cues are not present.
Focus and engagement
I find it easy to disengage when on an online meeting and I find myself other tasks to accomplish while I sit on mute or even worse, turn my camera off. In-person meetings tend to command more attention and engagement from participants. The physical presence of colleagues or clients creates a sense of accountability and reduces the likelihood of multitasking.
Social and emotional benefits
Human beings are inherently social creatures, and face-to-face interactions fulfill our innate need for social connection. Meeting in person can boost morale, create a sense of belonging, and enhance overall well-being. The social interactions that occur naturally before, during and after meetings can strengthen team bonds and foster a positive work culture. It’s also easier to stay informed when you’re meeting in person.
Non-verbal communication
A big part of communication is non-verbal. Facial expressions, gestures and posture convey emotions and intentions that words alone cannot. In-person meetings provide the full spectrum of these non-verbal cues, leading to better understanding.

Online or in person?
While an online meeting may be a good way to include members, colleagues, friends or family who are remote, the benefits of meeting in person are substantial. That doesn’t mean you can’t combine the two types of communication, if you harness the strengths of each.
Which is your preferred way to meet, face-to-face or online?
