Have you thought about starting a business? Is your idea for an innovative product or a service one that no one can live without?
If you’re like me, you may be holding back because you think successful entrepreneurs have financial backing and industry connections you’ll never have. Or, maybe you’re eager to start but just don’t know how? There’s no reason to think either.
Starting a business is an exciting journey! There are lots of steps along the way, starting with idea generation that doesn’t cost you any money!
What are you passionate about?
I have a passion for words. Together with my business partner, I love discovering hidden meanings, clever wordplay and decoding challenging conundrums. Not only do we find it fun, it’s also intellectually stimulating and deeply satisfying.
Our curiosity for words and focus on learning, led us to develop a game that is not only fun, but also supports literacy, mental health and engagement with family and friends.
Is there a demand for your product?
Our next step was to do a little research to see if there was a market for what we wanted to promote.
First we identified our target audience, analyzed competitors, and read up on industry trends.
We learned that parents are increasingly playing an active role in their children’s literacy development, partnering with educators to support learning at home (journal.imse.com).
As well, incorporating board games into literacy education can make learning more interactive and enjoyable, ultimately fostering a love for reading and learning. With the elderly, playing board games helps keep the mind sharp by engaging memory, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

We also held game nights to test the game with friends and family.
Once we had a clear idea and solid research, we were ready for the next steps, creating a business plan.
